Biyar Aqueduct
The Biyar Aqueduct or the "Shaft Riverbed" is a collection of 24 underground shafts hewed into the hard chalky stone of the Judean Hills. The intricate system of aqueducts was constructed from the Hasmonean period until the end of the Second Temple, and served to transport spring water from the Hebron Hills to Solomon's Pools and from there onwards to Jerusalem. In order to allow entry and maintenance of the tunnels vertical shafts had been dug, thereby making it possible today to enter and conduct guided tours along the aqueduct. The shafts and tunnels enable us to get an idea about the size of this ancient water project.
