The last Pesach
before the war
Kfar Etzion, April, 1948
Translated from the hebrew book Gush
Etzion, Yochanan ben Yakov
The following is a last testimony to
the last Pesach preperations and Seder night, 3 weeks prior to the fall
of Kibbutz Kfar Etzion. At this point all mothers and children are now in
Jerusalem
and all the remaining members, are men and single woman. The decision
was made to hold the seder in the dining hall. Tin cans with flowers
decorated the room with passages from the "Song of
Songs", the hint of spring in the air. Guards came down from the
hilltops, the bell that usually rang to call for the Shabbat remained
silenced as not to attract the attention of the enemy. The bells rang in
the hearts of all, even though recent months had been rough and very
difficult.
The seder took place with the reading
of the Haggadah ,hopeful and joyful singing, praying for a real
redemption and remembering their freinds who had already fallen in the
earlier battles that were not present.
Turns were taken at guard duty so all
would have a chance to participate. They would come in and join leaning
their rifles against the wall. Even the wounded were brought in to
participate in the festivities. During the singing of"Next year
in rebuilt Jerusalem"
the group burst out in moving singing and dancing.
