GUSH ETZION: THE COMMUNITIES THAT SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE

Gush Etzion is a thriving region, both historically and geographically significant, that is a natural destination for olim. Today, some 30% of Gush Etzion`s 15,000 residents are English speakers. Gush Etzion`s twenty communities afford breathtaking panoramic views of the Judean Hills, Judean Desert and Jerusalem. Residents enjoy a high quality of life, a 15-minute drive to Jerusalem on average, and an easy commute to Tel Aviv.

Featuring an extensive educational network that Gush Etzion is known for, it is an ideal location for families of all ages. From day-care centers to kindergartens; regional schools to high schools; yeshivot to seminaries; the many excellent choices enable each student to learn “al pi darko”, according to his way.

Regular public transportation, including free transportation for children to after school activities, easy access to health-care facilities, the Gush Etzion Community Center and Sports Complex, cultural activities and shopping.

The Key To Successful Absorption

The Gush Etzion Community Absorption Program has been created especially to welcome English-speaking families to Gush Etzion and extensive aliyah services and support. The services are unique in that olim receive the benefits of an absorption center, and the comfort of a private home or apartment within their chosen community.

Community Life
Right from the start, you and your family will be part of the warm, active community life of Gush Etzion. A buddy family will be assigned to you to help ease your way through the early months. Youth movement activities abound for children of all ages, as well as shiurim for adults in Hebrew and in English. Exciting social and educational activities, tours and outings are designed to help you acclimate.

Housing

Newly arrived families will live in pleasant, semi furnished flats that can be rented in the private market, until deciding on permanent housing.

Learning Hebrew

The Absorption Program offers a six-month, intensive Hebrew Ulpan course for adults. Course
level is based on the needs of the olim and can be expanded as necessary. For a more extensive range of classes, other Ulpans are available in nearby Jerusalem.

Children enter regular schools, where they receive special help in Hebrew. This is in the form of extra hours of in-school Hebrew tutoring by teachers and sherut leumi girls, and by matching up volunteer high school students with children who need extra support.

Employment
Olim can explore a wide range of professional opportunities  with an employment counselor. Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as well as Gush Etzion`s Industrial Park, are all within easy commuting distance Government grants and low-interest loans are available for beginning businesses and for entrepreneurs.

We have been fortunate to absorb families  from the USA, Canada, France, UK, Russia, Peru,  South Africa, and more. Additional families also expressed interest in making Gush Etzion their home, and we hope that with the new building projects underway, future Olim will soon be able to join the rapidly growing Gush Etzion communities.

Summer c
amps are provided for the children to help prepare them for the school year, and 3 levels of year long ulpan classes are now full of adults, with an additional class for retirees. Girls from the Sherut Leumi, the national volunteer service program, work with the new olim during school hours, and high school ‘mentors’ are assigned to each individual student for afternoon visits at home. A support group has recently been created for the adult Olim, led by a psychologist who is an Oleh herself, therefore there is a special understanding of the relevant issues.

Aliya To Gush Etzion Summer 2006

This past summer 14 new families came on Aliya to Gush Etzion from, France, England, Canada and the USA.

Prior to their Aliya the Regional Council of Gush Etzion prepared for their arrival by assisting in finding rental apartments, registering all the children to the appropriate schools and kindergartens and assigning "adoptive" families to guide the new families.

All families received upon arrival the basic staples necessary for the first few days, food, warm meals from neighbors; Shabbat was also taken care of, by invitations within the community a warm smile from people who care and a helping hand.

During the month of August a special summer camp ran, introducing the new children to the Hebrew language
and culture while meeting some of their new Israeli friends. This allowed the parents to have some time to unwind and take care of important errands and running around.

On September 1, school began for all the children and on the 10th after the kids settled in, a special children's ulpan began in Efrat. This allowed the kids to go to regular classes with their friends and than get picked up by bus at 10:30am to go to the children's ulpan in Efrat. This mixing of the regular program and the ulpan is to give a boost to the understanding of the Hebrew language and by doing so the kids can bounce back to the regular framework quicker with a slightly better understanding.

We have no doubt that making aliya is a very exciting yet difficult time. Taking that into consideration we are here to ease the process, making life a bit easier while getting used to your new environment.
