The Story

Fifty -nine years ago there were a total of 60 children in Gush Etzion . Since they had been evacuated to Jerusalem 5 months before the fall of Gush Etzion in May 1948, these children were saved.

The Children of Kfar Etzion, a new book that has recently been written by Professor Amia Lieblich, from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and published by Keter press, in Hebrew, researches the story of these children.

in 1948, 60% of the adult population in Gush Etzion fell in battle, leaving 32 widows, 51 orphans, and only 17 male kibbutz members.  Only ten families remained with both parents, and out  of these families,  4 fathers had been taken into captivity.

The book explores the memories of family life before the tragedy, and how Kibbutz Kfar Etzion  rebuilt  in 1967, still plays an important part in their lives today.

               Modern Day Miracles

Fifty-nine years later, Gush Eztion has 15  beautiful flourishing communities, 40 kindergartens, and 10 nursery schools, numbering 1500 toddlers. Since some of the children of this age are still at home so the numbers are even greater. What a difference between then and now!

This year 's  end- of- the -school year celebrations under the supervision of Bracha Shefler the supervisor  of the Early Childhood Department, focused on Gush Etzion's 40th anniversary.

The kindergarten children visited the Kfar Etzion Field School. All of the activities focused on the history of Gush Etzion  including both from the Biblical era of our Forefathers and our modern day history from the early 1920's.  Strengthen the heritage of Gush Etzion even at such a young age was the idea behind the activities.

Some of the children in these kindergartens are the great grandchildren of those that fell in 1948, and so another circle is closed.

Throughout the year the Gush Etzion Foundation received gifts from wonderful people which enabled us to purchase books and toys for the kindergartens. A disc was produced with the story of Kibbutz Kfar Etzion  in Hebrew especially  for young children.

We thank our friends and ask that they continue with their generosity so we may continue to strengthen our communities and  promote other educational projects.
