March of the Lamed Hey

Who were the Lamed Hey?
The Lamed Hey were 35 brave soldiers who were brutally murdered by Arab shepherds on their way to the besieged Gush Etzion, January 1948, 59 years ago. Their heroic story is an inseparable part of Jewish history in Gush Etzion. The thirty five, in English were young soldiers, some barely out of the camps, lovers of nature and life who took upon themselves a dangerous mission of no return, knowingly, to reach the besieged Gush Eztion with additional food and medical supplies.
On Thursday evening January 25, 2007, 700 youth and adults from all over the country marched together to commemorate the heroic Lamed Hey. They marched in the path they took 59 years ago, and ended the march with a ceremony and morning prayers.
We were honored to have with us Avi Dichter, Minister of Internal Security, Uzi Landau past MK, Likud, Nitzan Alon IDF Regional Commander, Nir Barakat, Jerusalem Council Member, Mayor Shaul Goldstein, Gush Etzion and Mayor Eli Mizrachi, Efrat.
The march was sponsored by the Regional Council of Gush Etzion, Gush Etzion Tourism Authority, The Gush Etzion Foundation, The United Jewish Federation of Metrowest N.J.,The Gush Etzion Community Center,The Kfar Etzion Field School and the Eretz Nehederet Foundation.

Lamed Hey Memorial Foundation

This foundation was formed by the families of the Lamed Hey who lost their dear ones on the 5th of Shvat, January 15, 1948.
The director of the foundation, Dr. Uri Michaeli, wrote a letter to the Mayor of the Regional Council, Shaul Goldstein, and to the organizer of the march, Oriya Dassberg with the following words translated from the Hebrew.
"In the name of the families, even after all of these years we cannot forget or comprehend the heroic act of these young men, their determination, sacrifice and commitment". We thank you for dedicating the march in their memory. By doing this you have insured that the next generation will "never forget".
On February 1st 2007, 40 high school students from the Melvin J Berman Hebrew Academy, MD, USA volunteered in Gush Etzion.
The students from grades 9-12 , boys and girls plus 5 staff spent a few hours at two different programs. One group assisted at the Pina Chama "Warm Corner" for soldiers, in memory of Dr. Shmuel Gilis and Tzachi Sasson Z'l who were both murdered during the last intifada from the community of Karmei Tzur. The widows together with the community set up this wonderful canteen for our soldiers.
The students helped in organizing and cleaning . The second group visited the 'Sadna', a wonderful program for integrating severe special needs children who fall between the cracks in the system.
The volunteers helped with repairs, painting and playing with the children. For more information: www.sadna.org
On Friday February 9, 2007 the 21 of Shvat there will be a march in their memory. This will begin at 8am from Kibbutz Kfar Etzion to the Pina Chama. At 10:30 a ceremony will take place at the Judaica Center honoring the volunteers of the Pina Chama and the soldiers.
Baby Tiferet had her first operation on January 31, 2007. She is now in recuperation which is a very slow process. The surgery was 9 hours long . The doctors will decide what the next stage is only after she is stronger. Thank you, from the family for all of your support.
