Eve of the founding of the State of Israel

Siege in the Hills
of Hebron

The book "Siege in the Hills of Hebron" by Dov Knohl, 400 pages and hardcover, with an introduction by Abba Eban, evaluations by Yigael Yadin and Yig'al Allon was first published in Hebrew in 1954.
Its compiler and editor, Dov Knohl was a founding member of Kfar Etzion and one of the few survivors of the final battle in Kibbutz Kfar Etzion. He collected diaries, letters, official reports and other primary sources which serve as the authentic material for the book.
His son serves as the Rabbi of the Kibbutz today.
Though the English edition has been abridged by about a half, it has remained completely faithful to the original.
During the War of Independence there were many miracles. Many Jewish settlements were saved at the last moment under unusual circumstance, which we can regard only as Divine intervention.
Unfortunately the four settlements in the Etzion Bloc fell.
Kfar Etzion, the oldest and largest of the four settlements of the Etzion Bloc, was the base for many of the soldiers that took part in the siege, and housed most of the important institutions of the Bloc. It was the hub of the operations planned and executed in the area in the course of the War, and the final battle centered mainly about it.
(Dov Knohl)
This book is a dramatic documentary account of the siege and fall of the Etzion Bloc on the eve of the founding of the state of Israel. It is a tribute to the valor and self-sacrifice of the soldiers of the Hagana and the Kibbutz members to save the communities and to bring aid to a besieged Jerusalem. It portrays men and women of simple faith in an hour touched by tragedy and exaltation. The tragic saga of the fall of the Etzion Bloc and the ensuing massacre is movingly recounted.
The memory of these events will certainly be held in reverence whenever the saga of Israel's rebirth is told. ( Abba Eban)
In the epilogue the unique story of longing, liberation and return to the Etzion Bloc following the Six Day War is told. This chapter updates the book to the present day as it describes the remarkable development of the Etzion Bloc upon the "Return of the children to their land". (Jeremiah 31:16)
